Between July and November each year, these giants travel about 4,000km from the Antarctic to the warm tropical waters of The Islands of Tahiti to mate and give birth.
French Polynesia has been a protected sanctuary for whales and other marine mammals since 2002, making it one of the most respected destinations in the world for ethical and regulated whale encounters.
Our expertise dates back to the early 2000s, when we began working alongside marine biologists specializing in marine mammal research. This scientific foundation shapes the way we approach every tour today—prioritizing safety, respect, and education.
With an official government permit, we offer guests the rare opportunity to observe and, when conditions allow, respectfully swim with humpback whales in the crystal-clear waters of the Pacific Ocean—an unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime experience.
How Are Whale Encounters Organized?
All excursions are conducted under strict government regulations to ensure the protection of the animals from 20 July to 20 November each year.
- Tours are private and operated exclusively around Moorea aboard our 9.5-meter RIB (rigid inflatable boat).
- Only three authorized vessels are allowed within a 100-meter radius of the whales at any given time.
- Each boat may take a maximum of 6 guests in the water, always accompanied by a certified professional guide with government whale-watching accreditation.
- Only licensed operators are permitted to enter this 100-meter zone and allow guests to snorkel.
These regulations ensure minimal disturbance and promote responsible wildlife interaction.
What Are the Chances of Seeing Whales?
Encounters are very likely during the season, especially at its peak. However, as with all wildlife experiences, sightings can never be guaranteed. Swimming with whales is only permitted under specific conditions:
- Whales must be calm and resting
- Interactions are not allowed when whales are active, socializing, or moving
French Polynesia became the first country in the world to fully protect its shark populations in 2007, establishing itself as a global leader in marine conservation and sustainable ocean tourism.
Thanks to this strong governmental commitment, the region is home to up to 12 recorded shark species, thriving in a preserved and balanced marine ecosystem. This protection has created one of the most reliable destinations on Earth for year-round shark and other pelagic encounters, particularly in the legendary atolls of Tuamotu Archipelago and the Society Islands.

French Polynesia’s strict marine conservation regulations ensure that all wildlife encounters remain ethical, natural, and sustainable. During the full moon of June or July, thousands of marbled groupers aggregate in the natural shallow and narrow south pass of UNESCO biosphere Fakarava atoll.
Patience and careful observation are essential before the action begins—but when it does, it is both sudden and extraordinary. During the grouper spawning season in French Polynesia, large aggregations of groupers gather to reproduce, creating an intense and short-lived natural spectacle.
This event attracts hundreds of grey reef sharks, drawn by the high concentration of fish, resulting in a rare and powerful underwater feeding frenzy. Taking place in remote areas such as the Tuamotu Archipelago, this phenomenon is considered one of the most unique shark diving experiences in the world.
For divers and underwater photographers, witnessing this natural event is a must when planning a diving trip to French Polynesia at the right time of year.
