It is with heavy heart that we share news of Mark Drewelow’s passing over the weekend. He was surrounded by his wife Cristina, his beloved girls, and other close members of the family.
Mark will be remembered as a founder and original inspiration for YachtAid Global. As our longest-serving volunteer over 18 years, Mark saved numerous lives in the far and near corners of the globe, brought hope, alleviated suffering, and made this planet a better place for many.
As a captain, visiting more than 70 countries along his 2-decade circumnavigation of the world, accumulating over 250,000 nautical miles at sea, Mark built a bridge between the luxury of yachting and the essential duty of service. He saw not just the destinations, but the people. Not just the marinas, but the villages beyond them. And with the unwavering belief that yachts could be vessels of hope — he founded YachtAid Global, forever changing the course of lives across the world.
As an athlete, he was known as the “flying squirrel” for his wave-riding style and ability to glide effortlessly across the face of powerful swells. Beyond his impressive competition record, Mark had become a respected figure in the bodysurfing community, advocating for the sport’s recognition and inspiring the next generation of wave riders. His innovative techniques, blending classic bodysurfing maneuvers with fluid, high-speed transitions, have redefined what is possible without a board. He recently was named head coach of Team USA for the upcoming IBSA Bodysurfing World Tour Championships in Australia.
Although as an organization, we are deeply saddened by the loss of our dear friend, we find solace in being able to continue the work that Mark loved doing so much too. With over 300 yachts and thousands of crew participating over the years, the vision and mission for the global yachting community to care continues.
It is our shared belief and mission that it’s the yachting community’s responsibility to care for the people and the environments of the coastal communities around the globe who share with us their land, sea, and spirit. That was Mark’s original vision, and it will continue to guide our work.

Today, the yachting community has lost a true ambassador and ocean advocate. Mark Drewelow was a man of integrity and inspiration. After sailing across the world, he founded YachtAid Global and pioneered the use of superyachts for disaster relief in coastal areas. His vision led us to partner with YachtAid Global on projects in French Polynesia, and his legacy will continue to shape the future. We are committed to carrying forward the work he started.
Mark, our longtime friend, you will be deeply missed. Thank you for your invaluable contributions to the oceans, local communities, and those in need.
To Cristina, Julia and Lucy, our hearts and thoughts are with you and your family.
