Researchers have developed an AI system that analyzes 3D X-ray scans to detect shark fins, seahorses, and sea cucumbers with an overall accuracy of about 92%.
While AI won’t replace frontline inspectors, it can help flag suspicious bags faster and more accurately, making it harder for trafficked marine wildlife to slip through airports and mail centers.
It’s an encouraging example of how technology can support conservation and help protect vulnerable ocean species before they disappear from the wild.
